GTA 6 might get smarter Non-Player Characters
The as of yet unannounced sixth addition to the Grand Theft Auto series might feature better artificial intelligence for its drivers. A new patent suggests GTA 6 will use a system that would improve the situational awareness of so-called ‘Non-Player Characters’, especially when driving.
The patent is called “System and Method for Virtual Navigation in a Gaming Environment” and was filed by Rockstar’s associate director of technology David Hynd and lead AI programmer Simon Parr. It would have drivers look beyond the objects in their immediate vicinity, giving them a greater sense of anticipation and thus behave more intelligently on the roads.
A patent filing however is not indicative of what will appear in a final product, it’s more of a failsafe to protect -in this case- Rockstar’s technologies in the event that they are used. It does seem very likely that this tech means Rockstar is experimenting with new ideas for GTA 6.
Grand Theft Auto 6 remains a rumour, albeit a very educated one, and instead, Rockstar is focussed on bringing a next-gen build of Grand Theft Auto 5 to PS5 and Xbox Series X.
